Abstract

A method for an exact algebraic calculation of refracted wave fronts, based on the generalized ray-tracing equations, is presented and applied to spherical refracting surfaces. Plane surfaces are obtained as a limiting case. Wave fronts refracted by cylindrical surfaces can then be studied because cylinders are envelopes of a one-dimensional family of planes.
