Abstract

The four laws of Arago–Fresnel governing the interference of polarized light were determined experimentally. Analytical proofs are derived directly from first principles. The technique used for the proofs is that of the spectral representation of stationary stochastic processes in conjunction with the Jones matrix description of a polarizer.
