Quadrature-phase simple-cell pairs are appropriately described in complex analytic form

Abstract

Recent discussions regarding uncertainty metrics that might have shaped the evolution of the image-coding primitives observed in the brain’s visual cortex rejected the use of complex-form filter solutions to the uncertainty minimization problem. This unnecessary and unnatural restriction arises from a misconception regarding the complex phasor form and the underlying real quantities that constitute it. The most appropriate, concise, and useful description of paired quadrature-phase cells is still the complex filter form embraced in previous discussions of conjoint uncertainty.
