Scattering of electromagnetic waves from a cylinder in front of a conducting plane

Abstract

The extinction theorem for multiply connected domains is established. The use of this law as a nonlocal boundary condition permits the numerical simulation of the scattering of light and other electromagnetic waves from systems composed of surfaces of separate arbitrary bodies. In this context the scattering from a cylinder in front of a plane is investigated, with both media being perfectly conducting. Far fields and angular spectra are discussed; however, we emphasize the near fields in the space between the cylinder and the plane, showing conditions under which the intensities in this zone can be greatly enhanced for s polarization at certain angles of incidence of the illuminating wave.
