Abstract
The validity of the Talbot effect is discussed on the basis of a rigorous analytical expression for the diffracted intensity by a one-dimensional Ronchi grid. Differences from the conventional treatment using the Fresnel approximation arise for small values of the ratio p/λ, where p is the period of the grid and λ the wavelength. For values of p/λ < 20 these differences become significant.
